Afghanistan: President Karzai
Hamid Karzai became the Chairman of the Transitional Administration on 5 December 2001. He was then chosen for a two year term as the Interim President during the 2002 Loya Jirga. President Karzai was elected by the people of Afghanistan for his first five year term in 2004. He was re-elected in 2009 after election that was marred deeply by fraud, most of it in favor of the president, and saw his chief rival drop out before a second round of voting could be held.
