Afghanistan: Sheberghan

Over three thousand Taliban fighters were imprisoned at Sheberghan prison following the fall of Kunduz and the battle at Qala-i-Jhangi fort in November 2001. Hundreds are said to have suffocated to death in freight containers while being transported to the prison. In May 2002 the ICRC began therapeutic feeding for nearl 1000 of the Pakistani and Afghan prisoners. All were eventually released on amnesty.
